Having faced several fears head-on in 2024, one of my New Year’s resolutions for 2025 is to keep pushing boundaries and overcoming obstacles to make travel more accessible and enjoyable.
This blog is a personal one. I’ve dug deep for this piece and shared some of my everyday fears and worries - and yes, I’m baring it all - literally and figuratively. I’m sharing my experiences, tips and even a couple of photos that show me embracing the poolside life! Eeek! My hope? To support and (hopefully) inspire anyone who feels held back by their shape.
Travelling is one of life’s great joys, but as a plus-size person, it also comes with unique challenges and anxieties. As someone who understands these feelings, I want to help make others’ journeys more comfortable and empowering.
Here’s some of my biggest worries and a few strategies I’ve learned along the way...
Aeroplane seating woes
One of the biggest concerns for plus-size travellers? Fitting into airplane seats. Will the seatbelt fit? Will I end up in my neighbour’s space? Here are my top tips...
Choose your seat wisely (or ask your travel agent to!)
For me, window seats are a winner. I can lean against the wall and avoid worrying about the trolley or toilet-goers. Some airlines also allow you to pre-select wider seats - definitely worth the investment for peace of mind. (Avoid extra legroom rows, though; the solid armrests can be a squeeze).
Seat belt extenders
Flight attendants are absolute pros at discreetly handing you one, or you can buy your own. (Just be aware they aren’t universal - I’ve learned this the hard way!)
Check seat dimensions
Websites like SeatGuru are a lifesaver for seeing seat sizes ahead of time. It takes the guesswork out of planning.
Consider upgrading
If your budget allows, investigate premium economy or business class for wider seats, extra comfort and a more relaxed experience.
Lap tray troubles
If you’ve ever worried about lap trays digging in, I get it. But there are ways around it...
Bring snacks instead
My favourite trick? Picking up a meal deal at the airport. It’s often cheaper and means I can skip using the tray altogether.
Alternative lap trays
Portable lap trays or foldable table attachments can be a godsend.
Ask for help
Flight attendants can be brilliant problem-solvers. Don’t hesitate to ask!
Confidence at the pool or beach

Feeling self-conscious by the pool or on the beach? Worried about stares or judgment from others? You’re not alone - I’ve been there. But it doesn’t have to hold you back.
Find swimwear you love
High-waisted bikinis, tankinis or swim dresses - choose what makes you feel good.
Stylish cover-ups
These can give you a confidence boost while you ease into poolside relaxation.
Change your focus
Most people are too busy enjoying their own holiday to worry about anyone else. I try to remind myself of that and admire others who confidently embrace their bodies. Be that person for someone else! Celebrate your body and remind yourself that everyone deserves to enjoy the water.
Check out a couple of my brave poolside snaps. If I can do it, so can you!
Navigating public transport and theme parks

From turnstiles to ride seats, plus-size travellers face unique challenges in these spaces. Here’s how I manage...
Research in advance
Theme parks and public transport systems often share size guidelines online - get clued up before you go.
Speak up
Staff are there to help and are usually trained to accommodate different needs.
Own your space
Your comfort matters, so advocate for yourself with confidence.
My general tips for stress-free travel
These tips have become my go-to for making journeys smoother:
Pack smart
Compression leggings, comfortable shoes and breathable fabrics can make long journeys more comfortable.
Stay hydrated and stretch regularly
Especially on long flights or car journeys (or camel rides, for that matter!).
Prioritise joyful activities
Whether it’s a spa day, a scenic train ride, a game of golf or a fabulous, guided tour, plan your trip around what makes you feel good.
Remember, you belong everywhere

Plus-size travelling has its challenges, but here’s the truth: your body is not a barrier to adventure. It’s your ticket to experiencing life’s wonders. By planning ahead, speaking up when needed and embracing your worth, you can turn travel into something truly empowering.
Let’s rewrite the story together: travel is for everyone, and that includes me and you.
