Flis' Blog: Hotels that do good – Attitude in Mauritius

In a world where sustainability often feels like a mere buzzword, it’s refreshing to find a hotel chain that genuinely practices what it preaches. Enter Attitude Hotels in Mauritius - a collection of eight 3* and 4* properties that not only offer incredible holiday experiences but also actively contribute to the well-being of the local community, economy and environment.

As I've been diving deeper into family travel options, the Indian Ocean, particularly Mauritius, has really caught my attention. With all-inclusive packages and prices surprisingly comparable to Europe, these hotels offer excellent value for families, honeymooners, and even multi-generational trips.

Whether you’re planning a family holiday, a vow renewal or just a well-deserved break, these properties offer experiences that might be more affordable than you think - and with a much more exotic flair!

Of course, the beautiful beaches, bluer-than-blue pools and dine-around options are reason enough to choose Attitude for your Mauritius getaway. But what really sets them apart is their deep commitment to making a positive impact on the island.

From the reusable Dopper water bottles provided to guests, to rooms adorned with locally crafted furnishings, Attitude Hotels exemplify how tourism can be done right.

Single-use plastics are nowhere to be found in the guest experience. Instead, you can visit the Bulk Shop to stock up on coffee, tea, sugar and snacks using reusable glass jars.

Fresh fruit and salad are sourced from the local Mayaven family, local bands are given the stage to perform, and the spa exclusively uses 100% natural ingredients grown in the island’s lush La Vallée de Ferney.

For eco-conscious travellers, the Marine Discovery Centre at Lagoon Attitude is a must-visit. Staffed by marine biologists, it offers a chance to learn about the island’s marine life and even participate in vital research projects, such as photographing humpback whales on a sustainable whale-watching excursion. I’d also recommend booking a kayaking tour through the mangroves, following their snorkelling trail and joining one of their upcycling art classes!

Otentik Experiences

One of the most remarkable features of Attitude Hotels is their Otentik (authentic) experience programme, which invites guests to engage with the local culture and environment in truly meaningful ways. Every activity is designed to deepen your connection with the heart of Mauritius.

My two favourites are Otentik Dinner and Otentik Discovery...

Otentik Dinner

Dine with a local family - help prepare the meal, learn about the island from those who know it best, and perhaps enjoy some live music or dancing, too!

Otentik Discovery

Explore the vibrant street food scene in Port Louis. Attitude Hotels even has its own app to guide you through self-guided walking and cycling tours. I highly recommend the walking tour of Port Louis for a taste of the best street food and a look at the city’s cool street art.

The Attitude Hotels

Each of the eight Attitude Hotels has its own unique charm, but here are two of my personal favourites:

The Ravenala Attitude

Tucked away on the northwest coast in Balaclava, The Ravenala Attitude is a true celebration of tropical living. The name ‘Ravenala’ refers to the traveller’s tree (or traveller’s palm), easily recognised by its striking, fan-shaped arrangement of long leaves.

Surrounded by lush gardens and the tranquil Turtle Bay, this all-suite hotel is ideal for both families and couples. It features inviting pools, a beautiful beach and a wide range of activities, including a kids' club and a fitness trail along the river. Plus, it’s conveniently close to Port Louis.

With nine diverse dining options, including two adults-only venues, there’s something to please every palate. From the relaxed ambience of the Beach Bar to the exotic flavours of Madame Ming’s, The Ravenala Attitude offers a culinary experience for every taste.

Sunrise Attitude

For those seeking a tranquil, adults-only escape, Sunrise Attitude on the wild east coast is a dream come true. Positioned across from the stunning Belle Mare Beach, this hotel focuses on helping you reconnect with nature and yourself.

In harmony with its natural surroundings, the hotel’s décor features soothing shades of leafy green, earthy terracotta and mustard, complemented by Mauritian architecture that emphasises natural materials.

With its no-TV concept, swim-up rooms and private villas with pools, Sunrise Attitude provides a serene retreat ideal for honeymooners or anyone looking to unwind.

The focus here is on relaxation and reconnection - embracing the opportunity to care for yourself and savour every moment.

At Sunrise Attitude, greet the dawn on the beach with the soft guidance of a DJ's music that crescendos with the sunrise. Dance, relax or simply absorb the energising vibes of nature.

Enjoy a variety of delicious dishes and authentic street food, including a wide range of vegan options, all served in an enchanting setting - from covered market-style Mauritian eateries to laid-back spaces, perfect for unwinding after a day at the beach.

Attitude Hotels are broadening their horizons with a new property scheduled to open in Zanzibar in 2025. I’ll be eagerly following this exciting development and will keep you updated with the latest news as it unfolds.

If you're interested in Attitude Hotels or planning your next trip to Mauritius, feel free to reach out. I’d be delighted to help you experience the magic of Attitude for yourself.
